Every year when fresh garlic comes into season, many families buy it in bulk. However, fresh garlic is high in moisture and prone to sprouting and rotting, so how to preserve it for a long time is a major concern. Below are some scientific and practical storage methods to keep fresh garlic crisp and tender, with a shelf life of up to 3 months.

Room Temperature Dry Storage: Suitable for short-term storage (1-2 months)
This is the most convenient method, suitable for frequent daily use. First, clean the outer layer of soil off the fresh garlic, being careful not to wash it, and keep the skin intact. Then, lay it flat in a cool, well-ventilated place to dry for 1-2 days to remove excess surface moisture. Finally, place it in a mesh bag, paper bag, or a ventilated airtight container in a cool, dry place in the kitchen, away from heat sources and humid environments such as stoves and refrigerators. Keep the garlic loose during storage to avoid crushing and mold growth.

Refrigerated Storage: Suitable for medium- to long-term preservation (2-3 months)
Refrigeration is the preferred method for extending shelf life. First, separate fresh garlic cloves into individual pieces, peel off the outer dry skin, wash them, and pat them dry with kitchen paper. Then, place them in a sealed plastic bag or container, squeeze out the air, and seal it. Finally, store them in the refrigerator (0-4℃). This method effectively inhibits sprouting and keeps the garlic crisp. After use, seal it promptly to prevent odor transfer and moisture absorption.

Freezing: Suitable for long-term storage (over 3 months)

For bulk purchases, freezing maximizes nutrient and flavor retention. Peel and wash the garlic cloves, drain them, and chop them into minced or sliced garlic. Place them in ice cube trays with a small amount of water and freeze until they form garlic chunks. Alternatively, whole cloves can be placed directly in a sealed bag and frozen. No thawing is required when using; simply remove and cook directly, which is convenient, quick, and does not affect the flavor.

Avoid these 3 storage pitfalls:
1. Avoid storing garlic directly after washing, as residual moisture can easily lead to rotting.
2. Do not seal garlic in plastic bags at room temperature, as the lack of air circulation will accelerate mold growth.
3. Keep garlic away from fruits such as apples and bananas, as the ethylene they release will promote sprouting.

In summary, when purchasing fresh garlic, choose garlic with intact, undamaged skin that feels plump and heavy. Such garlic is easier to store. By following these methods, you can choose the appropriate storage method according to your family's needs, keeping fresh garlic in good condition and avoiding waste.
